Ian McCarthy Awarded Fulbright New Century Scholar

Feb 12, 2009

SFU Business is proud to announce Dr. Ian McCarthy as a Fulbright New Century Scholar (NCS) for the May 2009 to April 2010 term. As a NCS Scholar, he will be joining a select group of 25-30 research scholars and professionals from around the world to engage in collaborative thinking and multi-disciplinary research on a theme of global significance and long-term impact.

The 2009 program will focus on the role of higher education in national and global economic development with a specific focus on “The University as Innovation Driver and Knowledge Centre”. The program will engage scholars involved in research and project initiatives that advance understanding of the university as innovation driver and knowledge centre contributing to advancing economic prosperity.

The Fulbright New Century Scholars Program enhances change experience by enabling participants to maintain contact and exchange ideas about their research throughout the program. Guided by Dr. Miranda Schreurs, Director of Environmental Policy Research Centre and Professor of Comparative Politics at the Free University of Berlin, the Scholars will participate in an international exchange opportunity of two to six months to conduct research and share outcomes of their collaborative work with national and international organizations during a final plenary seminar.

Dr. McCarthy will be examining the role of university research parks as an innovative mechanism used by universities to move ideas and solutions from the laboratory to the market place in an effort to contribute to economic development and quality of life. The NCS Program will allow him to visit the Georgia Institute of Technology where he will work with Dr. Danny Breznitz from the School of Public Policy and collect case study data on the Technology Enterprise Park and Advanced Technology Development Centre at the Institute. The information collected from this case study will be analysed and compared with similar data that will have been collected from research parks in Canada and United Kingdom.
