JDC West Preview – get the inside track on Western Canada’s largest business competition
Jan 04, 2019
After more than a year of planning, the final preparations are underway as SFU Beedie readies itself for a historic event: hosting Western Canada’s biggest and most prestigious business competition for the first time. On Friday, January 11, around 1,300 attendees will arrive at SFU as the university hosts JDC West, often described as the Olympics of the business school world. With just days to go until the competition starts, members of the event’s organizing committee give an inside look at what they are most looking forward to at this major competition.
Bethany Chan, Co-Chair
The Organizing Committee has been working away at planning this event for over a year. With the competition being only days away, I’m most excited to see to see it finally come to life. We look forward to showcasing SFU’s hospitality and our community to the delegates!
Mavis Lum, Co-Chair
JDC West is an unforgettable event for all of its attendees. With a record number of over 500 observers coming to SFU and Burnaby to support the 624 competitors, I’m most excited to share the lively atmosphere that will be at all of our events over the weekend!
Gwen Wong, VP Academics
For JDC West 2019, I’ve taken on the role as VP Academics and in the past I’ve coached and competed at JDCW for the academic competition. Therefore, I’m looking forward to see what teams are going to put forth as solutions for the academic cases that we have put together for this year’s competition. Moreover, we are piloting a new academic area for JDCW 2019 which is Operations Management! Therefore, I’m especially excited to see how teams tackle this new case area.
Alice Joel, VP Events
As VP of Events, I’m so excited to recreate the magic of JDC West, especially for first-time delegates. Having competed once before in 2018, its hard to explain the thrill of running into Opening Ceremonies for the first time, cheering and dancing throughout Skit Night and Buffer Zone, and finally convincing someone to trade away that school jacket you’ve been eyeing all weekend at Swag Swap. It’s events like these that embody the spirit of JDC West, and I can’t wait to bring these moments to life for the 600+ competing delegates.
Angela Sibia, VP Athletics
JDC West is an event that showcases some of Western Canada’s most brilliant students. As the VP Athletics for JDC West 2019, I am most looking forward to witnessing the delegates compete with utmost sportsmanship and skill. With an out-of-the box competition such as this, the Athletics portfolio is one where students dedicate time out of their day to day work and studies to practice among their teams. Delegates who compete under this portfolio demonstrate the importance of work-life balance and developing cohesive teams.
Katy Peng, VP HR
I am most looking forward to working alongside our 200+ volunteers to welcome all delegates and guests to SFU. Since our volunteers are SFU students, I know that we will be proud and eager to showcase our school to our guests. I hope that our volunteers get the chance to make new connections and feel the community that the JDC West competition brings together.
