Professor Sudheer Gupta and recent PhD recipient Todd Green have been announced as the winners of this year’s TD Canada Trust Distinguished Teaching Award. David Dunne delivers business design to SFU’s MBA programs

Whether it’s in the delivery of state-of-the-art smart phones or innovative health care, design thinking is an increasingly critical element for businesses and organizations in 2012. For David Dunne, Beedie School of Business Adjunct Senior Fellow, the intersection of design and business translates into major challenges and opportunities for managers, entrepreneurs and other leaders. Design thinking is defined as approaching management problems as designers approach design problems. Though it has been traditionally associated with product and service design, it also has important implications for management, something recognized increasingly by both academic research and the business press. Dunne, an award-winning management educator, author and consultant who is jointly appointed with the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, joined Simon Fraser University earlier this year. He combines international experience as a senior executive with an outstanding record as an academic.

Management of Technology MBA grads’ company awarded contract with NASA

A company formed by two graduates of the Beedie School of Business Management of Technology MBA program has been awarded a contract to deliver a pilot water recovery unit to NASA. Saltworks Technologies will develop the unit to test the water recovery systems and processes at NASA Ames Research Center, with the intent for future use on board the International Space Station. According to the British Columbia business publication, the winners represent a wide array of businesses, "but they all have one focus: an unstoppable desire to be the best in their field." The site is the flagship property of MetroLeap Media Inc., a start-up co-founded by SFU Beedie School of Business undergraduate student Milun Tesovic and EMBA graduate Alan Juristovski, both active participants in SFU Venture Connection, which provides support to student entrepreneurs at the university.
