Ryan Beedie among trio of Impact Award winners at BASS Banquet
Feb 19, 2015
A trio of Beedie School of Business alumni and students were honoured for their achievements in business at the 14th annual BASS Banquet.
Beedie School of Business alumni Ryan Beedie and Matt Martell and undergraduate student Joaquim Sanvictores were this year’s recipients of the Impact Awards for their contributions to advancing the Beedie School of Business community.
The BASS Banquet, held this year on February 19 at the Sheraton Wall Centre in downtown Vancouver, is the Beedie School of Business’ signature undergraduate networking event.
Organized entirely by members of the Business Administration Student Society (BASS), each year the event brings together members of the Beedie and Vancouver community to celebrate the success of individuals that have contributed to the growth of the School and its students.
Ryan Beedie took home the Corporate Impact Award, recognizing a Canadian business leader who not only excels in their area of expertise, but also shows extraordinary commitment to their community.
As President of The Beedie Group, Ryan Beedie is building one of the largest and most successful industrial property development companies in Canada. He holds an undergraduate business degree in accounting and finance from Simon Fraser University, and in 2009 was declared Ernst & Young’s Pacific Region Entrepreneur of the Year.
In 2011, Ryan and his father Keith donated $22 million to Simon Fraser University to establish the Beedie School of Business. The donation is the largest gift SFU has ever received and is being used as an endowment for students, professorships and research chairs.
“In my career I have done some pretty special things, but the naming of the School will always be the best thing I have ever done, and I’m very proud of it,” said Beedie during a fireside chat at the BASS Banquet with 2013 Student Impact Award winner Kyle Krystalowich.
“The response from the students on the day we announced the gift was immediate and powerful, and something that I will never forget. Going to events like the BASS Banquet and seeing the impact we have had is incredible.”
Beedie School of Business alumnus Matt Martell was presented with the Alumni Impact Award for his exceptional contributions that inspire and benefit both Beedie students and alumni.
Since graduating, Martell has remained engaged with the Beedie community, in particular through case competitions, and is the founder of the Beedie Case Competition Training Program. The program provides a formalized process to prepare students for case competitions, teaching them skills such as case analysis and effective presentation.
He has also dedicated significant time to coaching Beedie case competition teams, acting as advisor for national and international competitions, including the Apex Global Case Challenge in Singapore, JDC-West, and the Belgrade Business International Case Competition (BBICC) in Serbia.
The 2015 Student Impact Award, presented to a student who continues to inspire the Beedie community through their dedication in academics, school involvement, and humanitarian work, this year went to Joaquim Sanvictores.
Sanvictores’s achievements include a term as President of the SFU chapter of the world’s largest student-run organization AIESEC, first place in the Human Resources category at the 2015 JDC West competition, two co-op terms, an international exchange in Denmark, and a term as a Beedie Ambassador.
