SFU Net Impact Competition connects MBAs with a passion for sustainability
Mar 19, 2015
Western Canada’s most sustainability-conscious MBA students will return to the Beedie School of Business in April to compete in the second annual SFU Net Impact Sustainability Case Competition.
After a successful inaugural event, the competition, organized entirely by a group of five Beedie MBA students on the SFU Net Impact executive board, aims to encourage up-and-coming business leaders to practice positive environmental business strategies.
The event, to be held on Saturday, April 18 at the Segal Graduate School in downtown Vancouver, will see MBA students from across North America compete for more than $4,000 in prize money.
Currently the competition has registrants from SFU, UBC, UVic, the University of Alberta, and Queen’s University, with registration still open for other universities to compete. Industry professionals are also invited to attend this event for free and meet current MBA students interested in sustainable business development.
“This is one of the only opportunities for our MBA colleagues to join forces on the west coast in the spirit of competition,” says Shannen McDonald, Co-President of the SFU Net Impact chapter. “It will be a great opportunity for participants to meet others with a common interest in sustainability.”
MBA students are encouraged to participate in this event to practice applying their skills and theory learned in classrooms. “In addition to executing new skills at the competition, MBAs build relationships with each other that can last a lifetime and network with professionals,” says Anna Migicovsky, Co-President of the SFU Net Impact chapter. “It is truly a unique experience to come together as a team, provide strategic solutions to a panel of judges, and possibly be crowned the winner.”
“Our students’ drive and creativity make events like this possible,” says Stephanie Reimer, Coordinator, Graduate Programs at the Beedie School of Business. “Initiatives such as this that our students bring to the table speak to the level of student engagement outside of the classroom at the Beedie School of Business. The trial and error of real-world experiences they are exposed to carries forward into their careers and future success.”
