Dec 19, 2014
Three teams of undergraduate students from the Beedie School of Business have netted top twenty finishes in the Montréal Exchange Options Trading Simulation competition.
Beedie undergraduate student Mitchell Wong triumphed over almost 1,500 entrants to bag the silver medal in the competition, netting $5,000 in prize money for his efforts.
Two other teams from Simon Fraser University also placed in the top 20, with Xiaomeng Liu and Yingliang Sun placing 16th, and the team of Lingwei Ma, Min zhou, Wenting Ni, and Suting Chen ending in 18th position.
The Montréal Exchange Options Trading Simulation competition tasks undergraduate students from across Canada with building a virtual options portfolio from an initial $100,000 investment.
Over the course of eight weeks, competing teams have to execute four predefined options trading strategies, in addition to a surprise fifth strategy that is revealed in the second week of the competition.
“For the Beedie School of Business to perform so creditably in such a prestigious competition is testament to the financial talents of both our students and faculty,” said Casey Dorin, Executive Director of Undergraduate Programs at the Beedie School of Business. “Our success in the competition underscores the quality of Beedie’s finance teaching, both in class and in initiatives such as the Beedie Endowment Asset Management fund.”
The competition is part of Montréal Exchange’s University Partnership initiative, which encourages students to learn about finance, options, and trading. In addition to the Trading Simulation, the initiative includes The Canadian Derivatives Exchange Scholars Program, and both a Financial Markets and Human Resources educational tool.
Canada’s oldest exchange, the Montréal Exchange is a fully electronic exchange dedicated to the development of the Canadian derivative markets.
“The Montréal Exchange Options Trading Simulation is Canada’s premier student trading competition, and offers students invaluable experience in testing their financial skills against peers from across the country,” said Julian Cheng, Beedie School of Business undergraduate student and SFU student ambassador for the competition.
