Fourth-year marketing students at Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus will join with community crafters in peddling their own creative wares at the annual Christmas Market on the Mezzanine Dec. 2, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

But this year, a group of first-year business counterparts is also getting in on the act.

Taking up a challenge from faculty coordinator Jennifer Beale, who is working with students in the new BusOne program, they’ll be showcasing their own creative ideas, from setting up their own chocolate delivery service to new twists on gingerbread ornaments and becoming elves for pictures with Santa.

“The students are excited about being part of this and they’re learning some great project management skills,” says Beale.

Students enrolled in the BusOne program, launched this fall, take common courses and attend weekly workshops to introduce them to extra-curricular activities within SFU Business. The program is also designed to ease their transition into university.

Meanwhile the veteran fourth-year students are required to create prototypes and sell their products at the market as part of a fourth-year marketing class. They’re going out on a creative limb this year with goods like automated garbage bins, designer light fixtures and chocolate dipped fortune cookies.

The market features the work of local crafters, artisans and students along with a book sale, silent auction and baked goods. Proceeds from the event will go to the United Way.
