“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky
I am sure that when the Great One, Wayne Gretzky uttered these words he was not referring to scholarships, awards, and bursaries. But the sentiment does apply.
We all know scholarships, awards, and bursaries are a great way to fund your education. They represent “free money opportunities” which means you can avoid taking out loans or avoid taking that extra shift at work. In the long run, this can mean graduating debt free.
Contrary to popular belief, there are a lot of scholarships, awards and bursaries out there for university students looking to fund their degrees. Moreover, you don’t have to look too far to find these opportunities. SFU has scholarship, award, and bursary offerings every semester open to students. All you need to do is apply.
Every year there is money left on the table because we don’t get applications. Too many students have that first thought: “There is no way I will win it, why would I apply.”
Here’s the thing: you don’t have to be the top of the class to apply for – and win – a scholarship, a bursary or an award. There are a lot of opportunities out there with various terms of reference, and not all of them are academic. Some opportunities look at community involvement, extra-curricular activities, areas of interest or even financial need. All you need to do is apply.
And so, we are back to the wise words of Wayne Gretzky, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” This is your chance, take a shot, and apply for scholarships, awards, and bursaries.
