Dr. Eduardo Schwartz has been appointed to the newly created position of Ryan Beedie Chair in Finance at Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business.

Schwartz is a highly-respected academic who has held positions in several of the world’s leading universities, including University of California (UCLA), the University of British Columbia, and the London Business School. He has an Engineering degree from the University of Chile and a Masters and Ph.D. in Finance from the University of British Columbia.

“I am delighted to be joining the Finance group at SFU Beedie and returning to Vancouver after 31 years in California,” says Schwartz. “I hope to be able to contribute to the spirit of collegiality and to the research environment. There are many fine colleagues in the School and I am looking forward to a fruitful collaboration with them”.

A leading expert in finance, Schwartz has conducted research in a wide range of subjects, including asset and securities pricing, interest rate models, asset allocation, natural resource investments and pricing internet companies. In addition, he has been recognized with numerous awards during his career, both for teaching excellence and his published research.

Dr. Schwartz is past president of the Western Finance Association and the American Finance Association. He is a Fellow of the American Finance Association and the Financial Management Association International. He is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He was awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Alicante in Spain and by the Copenhagen Business School in Denmark, and a Catedra de Excelencia by the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid. He has also been a consultant to governmental agencies, banks, investment banks and industrial corporations.

In his new role, Schwartz will both teach courses and support SFU Beedie’s leadership in developing world-class education programs in finance.

This new position is funded by the Ryan Beedie Chair in Finance Endowment Fund, which was established in 2012 using part of the Beedie family’s transformational $22 million donation to SFU Beedie. The donation is the largest gift that Simon Fraser University has ever received.

“Attracting an academic of Eduardo Schwartz’s standing to our faculty is a great endorsement of what we are doing here at SFU Beedie,” says Ali Dastmalchian, dean of the Beedie School of Business. “He is internationally recognized as a world-class teacher and expert in finance, and I am excited to work with him as we continually strive to develop and improve our programs.”
