Trailblazing researcher Jeong-Bon Kim honoured with 2023 SFU Distinguished Professor Award

We are delighted to announce that Jeong-Bon Kim, one of the newest faculty members at SFU’s Beedie School of Business, has been named a recipient of the 2023 SFU Distinguished Professor award. This accolade stands as a testament to Kim’s exceptional contributions to the field of accounting and finance and his unwavering dedication to academic excellence.

The SFU Distinguished Professor award, jointly initiated by SFU’s Vice-President, Academic and Provost, and the Vice-President, Research and International, seeks to recognize exceptional research faculty members who have demonstrated remarkable achievements.

Throughout his career, Kim has been a trailblazing researcher in the realm of financial reporting, capital markets, corporate governance, auditing, and international business. His dedication to research has earned him the distinction of being ranked the top accounting researcher in the world in terms of research impact—an achievement that showcases his exceptional influence in shaping the scholarly discourse within his field.

A prolific researcher, Kim has published over 140 refereed journal articles, with an impressive 39 of them appearing in top-tier journals such as the Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), Contemporary Accounting Research, and Review of Accounting Studies. His dedication to scholarly excellence has garnered him prominent roles within the academic community, such as serving as the editor for the Asia-Pacific Journal of Accounting and Economics and holding the consulting editor position for JIBS.

Kim earned his BBA and MSc degrees in accounting from Seoul National University, followed by a PhD from Temple University. Before joining SFU Beedie, Kim served as the Dean of the College of Business and Chair Professor of Accountancy at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

Prior to Kim’s tenure at CityU, he held the Wadsworth Chair in Accounting and Finance at the University of Waterloo, where he also served as the PhD program director. His contributions to academia have been recognized internationally, earning him the title of Honoured Professor at Fudan University and Distinguished Honorary Professor at Sun Yat-sen University.

Kim’s influence extends beyond his own research, as he has successfully placed his PhD and postdoctoral students at leading universities worldwide, including HEC-Paris, the University of Alberta, Norwegian School of Economics, University of Ottawa, Hong Kong Baptist University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and University of Science and Technology of China.
