Overview

This is an opportunity for MBA students with an interest in sustainability to apply learned skills developed during the year, obtain feedback from a panel of judges and network with like-minded individuals and industry leaders.  In addition, professionals gain valuable insight and strategic problem-solving resources otherwise unavailable to them and students gain lifetime experiences and a chance to win prize money for their team.

Purpose

Our purpose is to hold a sustainability-focused case competition on the West Coast.  This event creates a unique opportunity for MBA students to challenge each other and network with leading sustainability professionals.

This case competition will focus on skill development and knowledge application while strengthening teamwork among different MBA programs. This inter-university case competition will be a great avenue for students to put into practice their presentation and academic skills. Furthermore, it is a great opportunity for all SFU MBA cohorts (full-time, part-time, MOT, EMBA) to collaborate on an academic level. This case competition will not only enrich but also strengthen their knowledge base about sustainability. This is a live case scenario, with information released on the case two weeks prior to the competition dates.

Impact

Prior to 2014, there were no opportunities for MBA students in the Northwest, with an interest in sustainability, to compete in local case competitions. It is our ambition to continually grow the SFU Sustainability Challenge in order to draw more thought-leaders to the issue of sustainability, and build towards a legacy of being a premier west-coast competition.
