Informal Network Research in International HRM
About this Event
Informal networks are a societal phenomenon that can be a significant obstacle to the effectiveness of international managers and expatriates. However, informal networks can simultaneously enable and facilitate business activities and support the efficiency and effectiveness of managerial actions. While informal networking has been universally regarded as an important feature of expatriate effectiveness, respective network constructs as well as the act of networking abroad, remain weakly understood when taking expatriates’ ability to connect to local networks into account.
This webinar will showcase conceptual and empirical research on informal networks in International HRM. Its purpose is to create awareness that informal networking is not only relevant to the field of expatriate management but also to the broader trend towards global mobility and social cohesion in diverse and pluralistic societies.

About the speaker
Sven Horak teaches and researches in the field of international management, human resources management, and leadership ethics at The Peter J. Tobin College of Business at St. John's University in New York. His research examines the important role informality plays in managing globally. More specifically, he explores informal structures and the drivers and ideals of informal networking. His work helps global managers to connect and to improve their networking capabilities in a responsible way. Further, it enhances the theoretical and practical understanding of how informality and informal networking affects and influences the practice of managing abroad.
Sven worked for several years in the East Asian automotive industry, managing operations for the Robert Bosch Group in Tokyo, Seoul, and Stuttgart. Before joining Tobin, he was a post-doctoral fellow and research associate funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) at the Institute of East Asian Studies (IN-EAST) and the Mercator School of Management at Duisburg-Essen University in Germany. He was awarded a Dr. rer. oec. degree from Duisburg-Essen University for his research on the influence of culture on managerial decision-making behavior. He has held numerous research and teaching-related visiting positions at institutions such as The University of Tokyo, Assumption University in Bangkok, at all SKY universities in Korea (Seoul National, Korea, and Yonsei University), The Pennsylvania State University, and others. He is a visiting professor at Yonsei University in Seoul, an alum of the New Leader Program of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, and a member of the American Council on Germany (ACG).
This session will be moderated by Elaine Farndale, Professor of Human Resource Management, at Penn State University.
