BBA: Alicia Lee

Human Resource Management, International Business

“There are so many opportunities at SFU Beedie. I hope students take advantage of them and create memorable experiences during their time here. There is truly something for everyone. It’s all up to you!”

MY JOURNEY

As a kid, the one thing I knew was that I never wanted to work an office job. I wanted to move and face various challenges so that I could grow and improve my skill set, rather than sit at a desk every day. In grade nine, I joined my aunt who works in human resources for a “take your kid to work day” experience, and it was amazing! I sat through interviews and calls, watching her constantly on the move throughout the day. After seeing how much she enjoyed her job and how she was able to work with people, that was when I knew that I wanted to pursue business and to concentrate in HR.

MY SFU BEEDIE EXPERIENCE

Throughout my time at Beedie, I have had the pleasure of taking part in various student organizations. I learned so much about working with others and my own leadership styles, helping me to become better aware of my strengths and weaknesses. I’ve taken on some leadership roles which has taught me a lot about time management, prioritization, and organization. I’ve met amazing and talented individuals who I have developed strong friendships and connections with, which is the biggest thing that I’ve taken with me from these experiences.

One of the highlights of my time at Beedie has been participating in case competitions. From winning locally through SFU’s own PEAK Case Competition to earning the National Championship at the ACE Canada Nationals Competition, the experience of preparing and presenting a case has been absolutely life-changing. I learned to be more concise and direct with my words and thoughts, while being confident in what I was saying and what I believed in. These are important skills that I will take into my career and personal life for years to come.

NEXT STEPS

In the upper years of my degree, I hope to study abroad to broaden my global perspective. I have always loved travel and it would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience to fully immerse myself in another part of the world. Additionally, I hope to take on a co-op position to gain hands-on experience in the workplace, so that I can develop my skills and mindset even further.

After graduation, I hope to work in HR management and continue improving my leadership abilities, while helping others.
