BBA: Jaylynne Wong
Marketing, Human Resource Management
“SFU Beedie truly is a school with lots to offer. Whether it be student organizations, volunteer work, co-op work terms, or studying abroad, every student should consider these invaluable opportunities. Your path may not be the same as your peers’, but each person’s journey is a story to tell.”
MY JOURNEY
In high school, I considered two career paths I could potentially follow: science or business. I was drawn to business because of a particular teacher who made me enjoy learning about business and related concepts. I joined my school’s Business Case Competition Club which partnered with UBC Enactus Ennovate and took on the role of marketing executive. This opportunity allowed me to create social media posts, run campaigns, and be part of a team working to raise money for a local charity. Through this position, I found that I was passionate about marketing as I enjoyed thinking creatively to sell products and creating promotional strategies.
Upon coming to SFU Beedie, I took BUS 272 Behaviours in Organizations and thoroughly enjoyed the course. Perhaps it was the good teaming experience, or having a professor who made lectures bearable, but it piqued my interest in Human Resource Management, and I chose it as a concentration alongside Marketing.
MY SFU BEEDIE EXPERIENCE
For me, the first year of university was especially rough. To be thrown into a completely different learning environment with larger class sizes, I found it hard to connect with others. I joined BASS (Business Administration Student Society) Mentorship Program (BMP) in my first year. I was paired with another student mentee and an experienced mentor.
Through BMP, not only did I become best friends with the other mentee, but I was able to learn a lot from my mentor who persuaded me to join clubs and get more involved within SFU Beedie. I would have never met these wonderful people had I not joined the program.
Getting involved in clubs has helped me learn more about business and get hands-on experience, build professional competencies and leadership skills. I’ve had the opportunity to brainstorm and execute engaging activities and gala events, seek in-kind sponsorships, and navigate event logistics. I’ve also created budgets, drafted grant applications, processed cheque requisitions, and compiled monthly financial reports.

NEXT STEPS
I would like to continue getting involved at SFU Beedie whether it is through clubs, volunteering, or attending events affiliated with student organizations. In my time at SFU, I also want to complete co-op terms to gain real-life work experience.
In the Fall 2024 semester, I am studying abroad in Hong Kong where I hope to immerse myself in the culture and gain a global perspective.
After graduating from SFU, I hope to continue building on my skillset whether it is pursuing a career in human resources or marketing. I also hope to be an active SFU Alumni who can help support students in any way.
