BBA: Joaquin Parpan
Management Information Systems, Operations Management
“Each organization and club taps into a different interest of mine and has helped shape my intended career path. I always encourage students I meet to go out of their comfort zones and to get involved.”
MY JOURNEY
I am an international student from the Philippines. My family and upbringing influenced my decision to pursue a BBA. I want to eventually use what I learn in and out of the classroom to help solve various issues and problems back home, and to tap into the broader opportunity that exists in Southeast Asia’s rapidly growing economy.
My decision to specialize in Management Information Systems (MIS) and Operations Management was both a strategic choice and a personal one. I have always been excited by new developments and applications of IT in day-to-day life, and I hope to eventually work in the tech space. The process-oriented operations specialization will have many applications in the Philippines, specifically the agriculture sector.
MY SFU BEEDIE EXPERIENCE
Extracurricular involvement has defined my SFU Beedie experience. I joined the Business Administration Student Society (BASS), and participated in CaseIT and placed first as a Challenger at JDC West. These clubs exposed me to the world of case competitions, both as a competitor and behind the scenes. I have been able to compete in and judge several other competitions. I also joined Axis Consulting and Management Information Student Association (MISA) as a project manager for MIS Link.
More recently, an 8-month co-op placement at Coast Capital Savings was very enriching. Working full-time was a welcome change of pace from being student, and I learned a lot working in Product Management.
These experiences have taught me invaluable skills that I would not have gained anywhere else while still a student. I grew as a person and as a young professional and met many great individuals who I now consider to be close friends.
A fond memory of mine is working with the BASS events team to organize the annual Christmas Thrift Shop for charity. It felt great working alongside friends, and it got me into the Christmas spirit and helped me feel better when I got homesick.
I’ve found it equally important to maintain a life outside of my professional and academic interests. I learned to take time for myself, my friends, and to enjoy hobbies whenever I can.
