Taylor Ward

Joint Program

BBA Alumnus

“Design and business come hand in hand in industry, and my SFU Beedie education gave me a unique way of thinking.”

Taylor was able to create a unique, personalized SFU experience by combining majors in SFU Beedie and Interactive Arts + Technology. By applying the skills and knowledge gained in both areas, he won the 2015 IXDA Student Design Challenge and was able to land a coveted role post graduation.

My experience at SFU Beedie

My experience went beyond SFU Beedie as I completed a joint major with the School of Interactive Arts + Technology. I used those two majors to my advantage as business tends to be very grounded, realistic, and procedural, while design tends to be logical and creative. It’s two different streams of thinking, and I gained a balance between them. Business also helped me collaborate with people who aren’t designers. That’s really important.

My Journey

Early in my studies, I took on a number of senior roles in student organizations. I worked as editor-in-chief of The Executive Magazine, a student-run publication produced by the SFU Business Administration Student Society (BASS), and acted as Director of Marketing for BASS LAUNCH.

From there, I expressed my artistic side through the production of a number of videos about SFU Beedie's Be More campaign and documentaries exploring business school case competitions in general.

I also did a number of internships. Through Design Intern roles at global advertising agencies R/GA in New York, CP+B in Colorado, Dossier in Vancouver, and lastly Facebook, I not only gained invaluable career experience, but also continuously built upon his design and business skills.

Apart from internships, I competed in the IxDA Student Design Challenge. With a competition theme of envisioning the wearable city, I earned first place for my novel shoe insole design that transforms kinetic energy from every step into potential electricity that can be used to power cities.
