Andrew Wong

MIS, Operations Management, BADM

Consulting Analyst, Accenture

“I am so happy that I chose SFU Beedie for my undergrad. I was able to shape my undergrad years around experiences I wanted in areas I am passionate about. I highly recommend students get out of their comfort zone and explore what is offered at SFU Beedie. You will gain some valuable experience and make some lifelong friends along the way.”

Andrew Wong embarked on his academic journey after experiencing a diverse range of activities in high school, including being part of the IB program and competing on both the volleyball and debate teams. These experiences sparked his drive for academic excellence, collaborative competition, and fostering meaningful discourse, ultimately leading him to pursue a BBA degree.

Throughout his tenure at SFU Beedie, Andrew’s personal interest in management information systems (MIS) and co-op experiences at PepsiCo, Fraser Health, Deloitte, and Microsoft, led him to concentrate in MIS and operations management. Andrew’s exposure to data analytics during his co-op positions further cultivated his interest, prompting him to pursue the BADM certificate.

My Journey

Active participation in extracurricular activities greatly enriched Andrew’s academic journey. As the past president of SFU AIESEC, he developed valuable skills in team management, strategic planning, and implementing effective strategies in the local market. His involvement with AIESEC played a pivotal role in securing his first co-op position at PepsiCo.

For three years, Andrew competed in Jeux du Commerce (JDC) West, the most prestigious business competition in western Canada. He excelled in areas such as Debate and Business Strategy, earning first place in both categories. In his penultimate year, Andrew took on the role of co-captain, contributing to his team winning the School of the Year and Academic School of the Year titles.

He then took his competition journey to global stage, competing at the Business Management Case Competition in Guadalajara, Mexico, where his team placed first and beat top schools like IE University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Copenhagen Business School. The exposure to various case competitions during Andrew’s time with JDC West fueled his passion for case analysis, ultimately leading him to pursue a career in consulting.

My experience at SFU Beedie

One of the highlights of Andrew’s experience at SFU Beedie was his participation in the exchange program at Copenhagen Business School. This unique opportunity immersed him in a different cultural environment and teaching style, significantly enhancing his undergraduate experience. He had the privilege of partaking in diverse experiences, including attending career fairs featuring prominent tech industry visitors, participating in consulting week workshops hosted by top-tier firms, and spectating the prestigious CBS case competition, which planted in him an intense interest in participating in case competitions upon returning to SFU. Additionally, the chance to travel across Europe broadened his global perspective and taught him about different cultures.

Throughout his involvement in student organizations and extracurricular activities, Andrew learned the importance of transforming ideas into reality.

“One of my biggest takeaways from extracurriculars is the opportunity to dream up a big idea and implement it in a student organization. This translated well into a lot of my co-ops and my current job as I may get an ambiguous request, but it would be my task to create a cohesive plan, execute it, and deliver results. The opportunity to do that in a ‘risk-free’ environment was definitely something I'll take away from my time at SFU Beedie.”
