BBA: Zayn Shehata

Management Information Systems, Finance

“University isn’t just about attending lectures and passing exams. You get what you put in, so the sooner you dive in and get involved, the more you’ll gain from your university experience.”

MY JOURNEY

Growing up and being the youngest of my siblings, a lot of their interests and knowledge trickled down to me and I’ve always had a natural curiosity for how things work behind the scenes – from my remote-control car to more complex topics now. This brought me to the intersection of people, business, and technology. This early exposure, curiosity for how any company runs, plus my desire to connect with people drew me towards the Business Administration program. Management Information Systems (MIS) and Finance are perfect combination for me to understand the numbers behind the scenes.

MY SFU BEEDIE EXPERIENCE

My time at SFU Beedie has been marked with several impactful and transformative moments, each contributing uniquely to my development.

Beedie LAUNCH was the propellant in my university journey and my first taste of what the next four years was going to be like for the. I got involved in case competitions such as PEAK, joined clubs such as BASS and ACE and did co-op work placements. Most recently, this summer I’m a part of the Management Consulting Career Preparation (MCCP) Program. I may have overlooked the impact of many of these experiences in the moment, but in hindsight, I am ever so glad I experienced them.

One thing from my course learnings that I will say is very valuable is being able to talk the business talk and understand what is going on around me. In a lot of co-op and career cases, you may not be doing the work yourself, but it is crucial that you’re able to communicate with those who do. In some cases, you get to take the theory you learn in class and apply it, allowing you to see the real-world impact of your contributions.

NEXT STEPS

As I’m wrapping up my undergrad, I’m preparing for a study abroad term.  I’m eyeing opportunities in consulting as well as product management afterwards. As I progress through my career, I’d like to give some time on the side for my passion projects, whether it be in the realm of technology or biotechnology – maybe in a decade time it can be a full-time gig!

Career aside, I love travelling and I hope to travel to at least 50 per cent of the countries in the world. I’m always keen on seeing new faces and new places. All in all, the world keeps moving and we’ll see where it takes me.
