Business Minor: Simran Rajwani
Business Minor
“Adding a business minor shifted my university journey to add an interactive aspect and industry research that complements my economics major.”
MY JOURNEY
In 2021, After two challenging semesters of remote learning from India and navigating time differences and disruptions, I moved to Canada to attend Simon Fraser University in person. I started with a major in economics, and after getting the gist of the main aspects of my major, I decided to add a business minor to the mix to combine research and mathematical aspects of studying with practical studies through a more business analytical approach.
MY EXPERIENCE
I appreciate how the business minor program has been formulated to tackle important aspects of a business degree with courses such as the Fundamentals of Marketing, Managerial Accounting, as well as International Business Strategy. Another important aspect the business minor is how it builds a sense of participation through graded activities and in-class presentations—skills for a successful corporate career.
Micro and macroeconomics, paired with accounting, has given me a solid foundation as an economics major. While courses in business strategy and marketing have equipped me with the skills to analyze companies in-depth, offering unique insights into industry trends and uncovering the often-overlooked aspects of business decision making. Ultimately, this led me to a financial reporting analyst intern role at Seaspan Corp Accounting Department.
I can’t recommend enough being part of a club while at university. From enhancing my resume to building connections and growing my network, it fills some gaps that merely taking courses creates. You learn to manage time while balancing coursework and additional responsibilities, gain practical experience and mentorship from peers.
