“We always talk about needing a purpose in life. Volunteering your time with SFU Beedie could form part of that purpose.”
Why I volunteer with SFU Beedie
I was in the Mentors in Business program as a mentee when I was studying. I certainly picked up useful career advice during that time, so giving back is one of the reasons for volunteering my time with SFU Beedie.
Another reason is continuous learning. In order to fully engage in life, I feel it is essential to keep growing our knowledge and skillsets, both in our personal and professional life. I see mentorship as a two-way learning opportunity.
Every mentee that I’ve met, I strive to offer my true and honest outlook on any topics we discuss. They are all talented individuals and very often, all they need is a different perspective.
How I give back
I have participated in the Mentors in Business program as a mentor since my graduation in 2015. I’ve met and built professional relationship with a number of mentees during that time.
The rewards of volunteering
During my journey as a mentor with SFU Beedie, I have had opportunities to meet mentees from different backgrounds at different stages in their career with different career goals. Listening to their journey and discussing their career helps me reflect on my own, and undoubtedly keeps me on my toes to never stop progressing.
What it means to be part of the SFU Beedie alumni community
I was impacted by a number of my colleagues in the EMBA program. We stay in touch and I see them not only as friends, but also mentors who offer me advice and support in various aspects of life.
Over the years, SFU Beedie School of Business has established a great reputation in the local business community. I am proud to be a part of it.
