PhD: Cagdas Kilic

Management and Organization Studies

My academic journey

I started my undergraduate education in psychology and explored different subfields such as clinical, experimental, and cognitive psychology. I then pursued my master’s degree in industrial, work and organizational psychology.

Toward the end of my master’s studies, I came to Beedie School of Business as a Visiting Graduate Research Student to work with Mila Lazarova and ended up joining the PhD program later on.

My research focus

In my current research, I am focusing on a group of professionals who like to call themselves digital nomads. My goal is to understand why people are motivated to have such a lifestyle, what their long-term life aspirations are, as well as their life satisfaction and well-being based on self-determination theory.

By delving into these aspects, my research aims to provide a realistic picture of the digital nomad lifestyle. It can guide individuals in making informed choices about their career paths, inform policy decisions, and shape organizational practices.

I am quite enthusiastic about the future of work, and recently arising flexible work arrangements. I believe we are witnessing drastic changes in how work is done especially in recent years, and I want to help us better understand this relatively new employment arrangement.

My SFU Beedie experience

I clicked well with my supervisor in our research interests, hence she is the number one reason I decided to stay here to do my PhD. I should also say that the social environment here is quite supportive.

I believe it mostly boils down to people around you. Witnessing my professors and other administrative employees trying to help students with our concerns regardless of the administrative obstacles is quite touching. I will always be grateful for the way I have been treated here.

Where I am now

I am in the very early stages of my research journey, at the knowledge production stage. I hope to share my insights in peer-reviewed science journals, at conferences, and other possible mediums where I can reach policy makers and practitioners.
