Accounting

(Economics minor)

“I was attracted to the Beedie School of Business because of its excellent academic record and its commitment to student development outside the classroom. I am proud to have made the right choice to transfer!”

My academic journey

I am an international student of Indian origin, born and brought up in Dubai, U.A.E. I completed my high school education in Dubai, and in 11th grade, I started seeking study abroad options to become independent.

I successfully transferred to Simon Fraser University in Fall 2021. Initially, I started off as a major in Economics and a minor in Business. However, I sought to get involved in clubs and professional development outside the classroom. Therefore, I transferred to the business program, in Summer 2023.

I was inclined towards Accounting and Finance as people call me a ‘Finance Bro’ and I am a numbers guy! Eventually, I chose Accounting as I was interested in taxation and audit.

My SFU BEEDIE EXPERIENCE

My experience at SFU Beedie has been immensely enriching, offering numerous learning opportunities.

Some of the courses I’ve taken, such as Critical Thinking in Business (Bus 217w), Commercial Law (Bus 393) and Income Taxation for individuals (Bus 330), have been particularly helpful to me in navigating the legal, financial and cultural aspects of work and life in Canada.

A memorable experience was being part of the Canadian Association of Business Students (CABS) programming team, responsible for organizing the annual roundtable conference in Vancouver. We hosted 250 student leaders from 21 business schools across Canada. The three-day conference was the result of five months of rigorous planning and hard work. Collaborating with individuals from different time zones, backgrounds, and experiences is something I will cherish for years to come.

All the extra curriculars I have been part of have come with a steep learning curve and prepared me for the competitive workforce. These experiences have not only allowed me to forge meaningful connections and friendships but have also provided valuable insights that contributed to securing my Co-op term.

There has never been a moment at Beedie where I have felt alone. This sense of camaraderie and shared experiences is something I have deeply appreciate.

In the short term, I intend to secure my final co-op term with a notable accounting firm, particularly the Big 4, to gain valuable professional experience. I also plan to pursue my CPA designation and work as a staff accountant in the audit and assurance department of a Big 4 firm.

Looking further ahead, I envision establishing my own accounting consultancy firm and becoming self-employed. I aspire to remain actively involved in the SFU alumni network, offering guidance and support to university students based on my own experiences.
