STEP 1 - REVIEW APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS BELOW

Qualifying for the Executive MBA program takes more than academic ability. We value your experience, skills and knowledge. Typical applicants are high-potential managers and executives looking for a new challenge outside of their current training and experience. They are professionals, consultants or entrepreneurs seeking new skills and knowledge, and are looking for a more strategic perspective and enhanced managerial competence. Schedule a personal meeting with the Executive Director.

The Executive MBA program Admissions Committee adjudicates applicants based on the following qualifications:

A)  Previous Education An undergrad degree in any discipline, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (75% or "B" average).

A limited number of exceptional managers who lack a formal degree or professional designation, but have other outstanding qualifications may be admitted with the recommendation of taking specific university courses.

B)  GMAT
  • Applicants must achieve a minimum test score of 550 on the GMAT including a minimum of 5.0 on the AWA section.
  • Applicants who take their GMAT test after submitting their application should arrange to email (emba_program@sfu.ca) or fax (778.782.5122) their unofficial GMAT scores to ensure there is no delay in the application process as it takes up to 20 business days for official scores to arrive at SFU. The GMAT may be taken as often as desired, and SFU will only consider the highest score. The GMAT score is valid for five years from the exam date.
  • Applicants must instruct GMAT to send the original score report directly to the Executive MBA Office, code 6G8-N3-44.

For more information about the GMAT, test locations in BC, and exam preparation, please CLICK HERE or download a copy of the GMAT FAQ.

C)  Work Experience

Applicants should have 10 years of work experience, with at least four of those years in a managerial or professional position (successful applicants manage accounts, a client base and/or a technology).  Your work and life experiences in addition to your grades and test scores are considered in the application review.

D)  Language Proficiency

All courses in the EMBA program are taught in English, therefore all applicants must be fluent in English.
English is the language of instruction and communication in the University. Accordingly, an applicant whose primary language is not English or whose previous education has been conducted in another language must demonstrate command of English sufficient to pursue graduate studies in the chosen field. Applicants normally will be required to achieve a satisfactory score on a standardized English test acceptable to the University. This test must include a writing component. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) including reading, writing, speaking, and listening components, is acceptable for this purpose. The IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems) is also acceptable. The minimum university requirements for test scores is TOEFL 88 with a minimum of 20 in each category (internet based exam), or TOEFL 570 and TWE 5 (paper based), or TOEFL 230 (computer based), and IELTS overall band score of 7.0; some graduate programs have higher requirements, as indicated in their section of this Calendar.
